Do you like what you hear? It seems like every time Blitzen Trapper puts out a cd, there are 2 or 3 songs I hear that I really enjoy yet for some reason, I never dive deeper into the cd or go see them in concert. This song is from their 7th the first 3 were self released cd ‘VII’ which was released early in October. Very, very cool stuff. Next time they come thru, I will not be missing them. Also, I need to give a shout out to The videos of their in-studio performances are always fantastic.

All but one of the collection’s 13 new songs, written by singer-guitarists and co-founding members Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, were recorded during 13 days of sessions in August with longtime producer David Barbe. Six of the songs were the result of a burst of writing activity by Cooley. So I had time to really focus. I kind of had to re-learn how to write, because I didn’t write as many songs as I’d wanted on the last couple of records.
I was happy with these songs, and thrilled to go in and record so many that I felt real strongly about. With Cooley’s writing, there’s almost no precedent for it in our catalog. He came in with this stunning bunch of songs, full of this beautiful imagery. Hood says, “Every song on this record connects with another song. I noticed Cooley’s got a line in ‘Primer Coat’ about ‘apron strings,’ and I have the exact same image in one of my songs, ‘Hanging On. The last song written and recorded for the album, Hood’s rave-up “Pauline Hawkins,” was based on a new novel by Willy Vlautin and penned after another of his compositions was scrapped.
Hood says, “There was such a balance between Cooley’s songs and my songs that taking a song off the record would upset the balance a little bit. I liked the back-and-forth flow, like our shows tend to do. I got an advance copy of Willy’s latest book, The Free. I’ve been a fan of his writing for a while.

Thirsty Man (Blitzen Trapper) Cleared-for-takeoff, this tune has the classic retro feel to match the pilot’s aviators and the wisps of fog on the float pond. The pilot operates the plane with pulleys and levers.

Bio I am indistinguishable from my memories, inseparable from this place I’ve always lived. Songs made of rhymes and these rhymes like maps to the bizarre hinterlands of what we know and love. This is Blitzen Trapper’s seventh record for the books, another bizarre string of tales and touchstones, more beats and banjos by far than anything to date, since, well we figured a straight line between two points is preferable. At this point the road is home and home is home, which is to say there is no home left for me because at a certain point you can never go home as the old adage seems to more than imply.
The pac-northwest is a place of synthesis, a backwater for slag and leftovers, culturally speaking, and VII like this, like all my records it’s a synthesis of a whole mess of things. Our music, lovingly called ‘Rocky Mountain Whoop-ass’, a term itself coined by close associates to refer to what we play though our particular mountains are a more volcanic spur of the Rockies and so more solitary, brings together the strut, the twist, the headbang and the hillbilly tap, though in some cases it merely makes people want to drink or procreate.
I feel confident this genre will, if not become de facto will perform as an at least marginally amusing handle for music writers with any interest. The JD drinking, robotripping, dope smoking experimentation of youth. And even further back the country gospel tabernacle meetings out in Brooks, falling asleep as a child on hard wood benches while the country band plays Just A Closer Walk With Thee, the prayers of the saints rising for all us wandering youth.
Each of these songs starts from a small place, like a headwaters, a remembrance and then widens into a song. For instance, that old wreck of a shack buried in evergreen and murky darkness at the bend in the road up on Jackson Hill where we used to drink and never failed to give me a chill driving by in the old Impala for it’s implacable mystery, where Feel the Chill takes place.
Drive on Up, it seems you’re always driving on up to something, into the mountains to see a girlfriend above the reservoir where she lives in a single wide with her mom and a cougar stalks us at fifty yards through the brush, she says to bang sticks but never look it in the eye.

With many records, choosing between versions can often be a dilemma. But most Dead fans usually want everything, so consider this more a pairing than a choice. The early Mobile Fidelity version presents a wider soundstage than the new 45RPM reissue, with all vocals more out in front of the speakers. The current release lines everything up on nearly the same plane. Tonally, the early Mobile Fidelity is slightly crisper, and more etched on the very top end. Your personal taste and overall system tonal balance will determine what you prefer.

Can you tell me a little bit about the additions? We also have someone new running lights, sound, and monitors. Is that something you take into account when you record new music? At first it did because we knew it was just the two of us and we wanted to make sure we could do the same thing live. We kind of limited ourselves for that purpose. But this time around we decided to not worry about it too much and instead just do what we wanted to do.

And none too favorably. Their third album deviates little from the track laid by the first two, even though they go acoustic on several numbers. It pointed the way toward the epic songs that were soon to follow: He died in , just before the children of Zep Van Halen, Metallica, Scorpions, etc came into full recognition. In they produced the semi-autobigraphical rock opera Toy Room, which they performed that spring for three nights at the Wonder Ballroom, involving a cast and crew of many dozens. For that release the band assembled a performance art installation, which they displayed for one day at Buckman Park in southeast Portland. Sally Tomato After preparations for a film were shelved for the time being, the Marcelins and Flint began looking for a new project for Sally Tomato.
