Edward Scott Jones, known as Eddie, had an amazing wartime record as a member of Bomber Command, which had one of the highest fatality rates during the war. He survived despite being shot down in just before he flew his final mission, and then going on the run in France, before being being captured by the Germans. He spent the rest of the war in various prisoner-of-war camps in Germany and Poland, before being finally liberated by US forces.
He then became a freelance artist and illustrator, and produced many paintings in watercolours and oils, as well as drawings and prints. Many of these works featured aspects of Liverpool and the Mersey, two of his favourite subjects. His work has also been included in exhibitions in Manchester, London and Paris.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission’s report outlines several flaws in the inquiry into Robert Fleeting’s death. Crucially, it found the investigation failed to explain how the year-old from East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, had suffered internal injuries before he died at RAF Benson, Oxfordshire, on September 4, It also criticised the inquiry for failing to give an adequate explanation as to how the senior aircraftsman and RAF firefighter apparently hanged himself from a door closing mechanism which was almost a foot above him.
The IPCC report, the full details of which have been released for the first time, also raised concerns that officers had accepted the word of a key witness despite him giving contradictory statements. A coroner’s inquest in April last year ruled Mr Fleeting, who was engaged, took his own life by hanging himself from a door closer on the back of his room door after having consensual sex with a man and struggling with his sexuality.
They said they would have been relaxed if their son was gay, but insist he was heterosexual and happily engaged. They believe he was sexually assaulted. In its report, the IPCC, which upheld the complaint, said internal “bruising” Mr Fleeting had suffered had “been left entirely unexplained”. On the height of the door closing mechanism, it said: Mr Fleeting’s parents believe he did not know how to tie the knot, nor do they believe that “suicide” notes left were written by him.

Charlie Brown, spent 22 years as an Aircraft Engineer, working on Harrier Jump Jets in the Gulf and Afghanistan, but a few years after retiring from the service he and his wife moved to Saltash, which inspired him to change career. While maybe initially surprised to find a man sitting amongst them, they have totally accepted me as ‘one of their own’ so to speak. The Saltash resident has also done bridal nails on somebody on his course, and said that “everybody helps one another, lending equipment or nail varnishes”. Mr Brown has plans to work self employed as a mobile technician upon completing the course, and would consider working in a salon, but acknowledged that gaining seats in salons can be difficult as they are “limited”.
